Which _ROCK_ Are You?

Rock roulette with sedimental value (2021)

Which _ROCK_ Are You? is a speculative souvenir for Stornoway, the capital of Lewis and Harris in Scotland. It is a a rock roulette with sedimental value. Scroll through a collection of augmented prehistoric moss-encrusted boulders and let the algorithm decide which lands on you. Rock data is from the Rock Art Scotland project.

Commissioned as part of Bùth / Kiosk exhibition – a collective of artists, designers and makers speculating on what the kiosk might have for sale today. The exhibition was curated by Philippa C Thomas and Hector MacInnes, with Roddy Murray.

“From the late 1960s to the early ‘90s, Nicolson’s Kiosk stood on theplot of land now occupied by An Lanntair. A staple of Stornoway life and an early example of the small businesses servicing the tourist trail through the Hebrides, the kiosk sold “Gifts, Souvenirs & Fancy Goods.” These featured in its annual catalogue which was distributed around the islands. Entirely reliant on local suppliers and makers, its range of items was a testament to Hebridean ingenuity and idiosyncrasy.”
