Phonebook is a playful way of telling stories using a phone or tablet with intricately cut out pages of a book. The traditionally bound pop-up book connects paper pages to your phone to trigger magical animations that tell the story.
Making the Book
The book is a work in progress, and I have made a prototype using a range of processes including: bookbinding, pop-up mechanisms, image mapping, and micro-control. Inside the paper pages are small sensors that connect the physical book to a web-based application in the phone. Each page triggers a different part of the story when the page is “turned”, and pop-up mechanism allow the user to play with different parts of the story.
The prototype was made during a fortnight residency at IDEO, London. Ideas were developed through testing and playful interactions with Ideo designers. In the process a series of storyboards and animations were made, based on input from the studio. Here is a “making of” video:
